Too Many Goals?

If you're like me, you might get stuck consistently on what to do next or you feel overwhelmed with all the projects you have to accomplish. Now, it's not always all that bad, because you might enjoy having a to-do list at the same time, just like me.

However, there are moments where there's just so much to do with so little time, or you just lost the time you needed in one way or another.

Now, there are several ways to handle all of this and here is a few tips on what I do to get everything in order and reduce the stress.

First, I make a list of everything that needs to be done. This is a no-brainer. Actually, it does use the brain. Once you have everything written down, you get a perspective on what's really important and what you should do today, now, or later.

That brings me to my second tip.

You should sort out what is needed to be done at the moment, what will be due soon, or what needs your undivided attention.

If you're stressing out about the whole thing and you feel frantic, what I usually do, is do something that could relieve my stress. Sometimes, it's less productive when your mind is racing and you can't sit still. Come on, and take a deep breath. Stop for a few seconds, even if you think that that could cause your time to slip away. Remember that time slips away faster if your mind can't concentrate and if you can't get anything done.

If you need to make yourself some tea and take a moment to sniff it in and relax, do it. Whatever floats your boat.

This doesn't mean you should procrastinate though. Just take a short break, and keep it short. Otherwise, you're setting yourself up for more stress later.

Once you get yourself put together once again, work on your to-do list.

Now what if you have too many goals, that a to-do list and a break cannot handle? If you have something due soon or you just cannot really put your efforts on all parts of a project, I suggest that you hire someone to work for you. If you can't hire, have a good friend do things with you. Of course, good friends that will work with you are sometimes hard to find, but that doesn't mean you can't find them. Go join a group of people that work in what you do and make connections. It doesn't mean that they'll work for you for free, but it does mean you get your work done, have a friend, and have a good network.

If you can't do any of the above, I suggest that you drop some of your goals and be realistic. I know that sometimes, you just want to do everything, and that's how I feel sometimes too, but we're not going to be always perfect.

Is it really worth the stress for everything on your to-do list? One thing I learned about health is that stress can be a real killer. Think about that when you feel like you have to do everything, because if you do everything and you die of stress...well, what's it worth really?

Ask yourself, how important are each one of your goals? Then cross off what is good and what should be off your list.
